Some of this discussion will be familiar to you from the Aesthetic Encounter paper you did. You will be visiting the African collection at Atlanta’s own High Museum. 1. Begin by watching this short (2 minute) video about an African sculpture at the High museum, and answering the following questions: A. What is the name of the sculpture?
B. What does the curator say that this figure represents?
C. Where was this sculpture produced (the region of the continent, not the exact place)?
D. What do you find interesting, unusual, or curious about it?
2. Then, explore the High museum’s African collection until you find a a mask. Using the (compare + contrast) section of chap. 18 in Culture and Values (pp. 618-619) which is about masks, describe and contextualize your chosen object. Please choose just one!
A. Where is this mask from in Africa? B. When was it made?
C. Did it have a ceremonial function? What was its function, according to the museum notes? 3. Finally, take a look at the mask called Shine in the book (Fig. 18.18 on p. 619). It is often said that masks “reveal as much as they conceal.” What does this mask reveal and conceal? What do you think of this mask in comparison with the mask you chose from the museum? Is it similar and if so how? Is it different and if so how?
