“Countée Cullen (1903-1946) was an American poet associated with the Harlem Rennaissance, a flourishing of African American artistic activity centered in the Manhattan neighborhood of Harlem in the 1920s. Cullen who studied the classics in high school, went on to receive degrees in English from New York University and Harvard. In 1935 he published The Medea, and Some Other Poems, a collection that included his verse translation of Euripides’ Medea. At the time his work received mixed reviews.”
