Module 1: Population-based Nutrition Needs Assessment & Assistance Programs & Policies
(Complete ALL assignments listed below. It is recommended you allow at least 3 hours to complete each assignment.)
A) Need for Nutrition Education Fact Sheet OR Infographic:
Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to familiarize you with the national/state/local data sets on eating behaviors and to practice skills to assess the need for health education (CHES Responsibility I). The ability to utilize this data will be important in your career when you need to examine priority eating behaviors to target, to provide a rationale to administrators, or to educate the public on the need for nutrition education. It will also familiarize you with the needs of your chosen population and enhance your skills for developing infographics.
Instructions
• Select a target population (e.g., developmental/age group, ethnicity/race, gender, etc.); create a fact sheet OR infographic showing how nutrition education and/or healthy eating programs would help this population using data from national, state, local surveys, and research showing the need for/gaps in programs, services. See Appendix 2.
• Fact sheets should include: a title; your name/date created in bottom footnote; at least 2 graphs or tables; at least 1-2 images/pictures; at least 3 bulleted facts for each section (from one of the cited resources; not opinion); a list of at least 3 professional references on the back/bottom in APA format; be 2 pages, and professional in appearance. For example, if you chose high school aged children, you might include YRBS data documenting the percentage of students consuming the foods/beverages measured, reporting overweight, etc. (NEEDthey are engaging in unhealthy eating and overweight). You might also include SHPSS data on the percentages on free/reduced lunch and other food programs, the percentage receiving nutrition education (GAPmany are not receiving nutrition education), and conclude with a need for more nutrition education (CONCLUSIONwe need more/better nutrition education, programs to help change behaviors).
• Infographics are similar to fact sheets, however, they rely more heavily on images to portray data, rather than text (fact sheets are more text-heavy). If you would like to do an infographic rather than a fact sheet to visually
2
portray the data, please visit this link, which includes information about infographics, as well as visuals:

assignment.
• Infographics should include: a title; your name/date created in bottom footnote; at least 2 graphs or tables; at least 1-2 images/pictures; at least 6 facts (from one of the cited resources; not opinion); a list of at least 2 relevant/current professional references on bottom in APA format; and be 1 page and professional in appearance.
Tip: Gather all the information you are going to include first, then format it in fact sheet OR infographic format. You may use Word (insert text boxes, images in a document, or search for fact sheet/newsletter template to use), Publisher, PicMonkey, or another graphic design template available on the Internet. See Assignment Submission Guidelines in Syllabus Appendix 1. Review the syllabus to make sure you have included everything.
• See Assignment Submission Guidelines in Appendix 1. Save as a PDF and submit to Canvas on the due date indicated in the syllabus.
Appendix 1:
2 pages (2x 550 words MINIMUM), Word doc, 12-point font, single-spaced, have 1” margins, Assignments should also be grammatically correct (PROOFREAD, run spell and grammar check!) and include proper APA citations as required (intext citations and references at the bottom/back in APA format). Turnitin is used to prevent plagiarism and to help you identify how to properly cite any borrowed sources. Check your percentage and report! In general, if it is over 35%, you will not receive credit for the assignment. Note: To help avoid plagiarism, do NOT cut and paste and information from a web site or other document into your assignments. Rather, read the information, then without referring to it, rewrite it in your own words.
