The committee determines that Susie did breach the school policy on plagiarism; however, the committee is not sure if it is intentional plagiarism or ignorance of APA formatting. What do you do now? What is the committee’s final decision about this grievance?
CASE STUDY PART ONE ANSWER:::
Plagiarism constitutes the act of using someone else’s ideas or work in your work as your own, with or without permission, without fully acknowledging the original owner of the work. To this effect, plagiarism is perceived differently in different cultures worldwide (Chien, 2014). To societies that perpetuate individualism, plagiarism may be taken to mean stealing other people’s words and using them as your own. On the other hand, plagiarism becomes a significant challenge, especially for non-westerners to understand what it means unless it is clearly defined and explained.
There are important questions that we would ask Susie as the School of Nursing Grievance Committee regarding plagiarism. (1) Did you use someone else’s work and submit it as your own without proper citations? (2) Did you do the work on your own, or someone else did the entire submission for you? (3) Did you copy-paste the paper from other sources without properly paraphrasing the excerpt? On the other hand, the School of Nursing Grievance Committee would have the following questions for the faculty member concerning plagiarism. (1) What methods have you incorporated in the course to help students avoid plagiarism, especially for non-native English speakers? (2) Do you have any remediation method in place to help a student in the case of plagiarism?
Student’s errors stem from poorly paraphrased excerpts to large copy-pasted text that is without citations or an entire submission that the student did not do. The questions posed to Susie are aimed at establishing what led to a case of plagiarism. On the part of the faculty, they should consider that Susie is a non-native English speaker and is exposed to a new academic culture (Pecorari, 2015). As a result, the lecturer could design the course to allow learners to submit the first, second, and final drafts of their assignments. Further, to prevent plagiarism cases, the lecturers could offer extra lessons on research methods and acceptable academic writing conventions. The course instructors should also consider allowing the learners to resubmit the assignment to earn a better grade as a remediation method.

In this part of the case study, you are to review a minimum of one policy for plagiarism at your school. Please identify three key points in the policy. Note: To complete this part of the case study, please search for an academic integrity policy from any nursing program and use that in the discussion. At the grievance hearing, Susie tells the committee that the faculty member who accused her of plagiarism is much younger and seems to be trying to “make a name for herself.” Susie told the faculty member that she has never had another faculty member take points off for any of her APA formatting. The committee’s next step is to review the policy for plagiarism at your school. Please identify three key points in the policy.

THE ANSWER TO PART TWO:::Academic integrity implies that students should always give respect to the work and efforts of others. An attempt to undertake over other people’s work or inhibit their progress means violating academic integrity. This integrity involves values like fairness, responsibility, honesty, and respect(Palmer College, 2021). At Yale School of Nursing, academic integrity is one of their core values as an institution, and they expect their students to follow. The disciplinary committee deals with any cases of plagiarism within their students accordingly.
The three principles of the policy include: no student is supposed to submit work that is fabricated and falsified, no student will assist another student in carrying out their assignment, and no student will accept such assistance in his or her work, and lastly, no student will submit the same work for assessment in two different courses(Fulton-Montgomery Community College., 2021).
Academic integrity has been one of the challenging policies, especially plagiarism, in many learning institutions globally. For example, Susie’s case is very complicated; she claims that she did not commit any crime and passed all through. Her claim that the faculty member is young and making a name cannot be taken off the table. On the other hand, she may also be guilty as charged. Such is the dilemma many institutions have. Reviewing the rules is key to academic integrity in the institution. The first point of the policy must be carefully looked into. Fabrication and falsified information must be carefully reviewed before passing judgment. Having different drafts will help a lot in making sure that cases of falsified information are checked. There are many cases of students assisting others to work, but they go unnoticed. Student progress records must be considered when trying to justify assistance from other students. In this case, Susie has been performing well; therefore, there is little chance that she cheated. Lastly, there is a lot to be done on the last principle that involves submitting the same assignment in two different courses. The question is what the problem is if the work is rightly his/hers.
