In this assignment you will develop a strong research question.
1. Watch the video from Week 4 on Library Info https://play.library.utoronto.ca/91d9f3462e6a051c934cb6a77373e3e9 Links to an external site.
2. Use James’ method (2:38 in video) of narrowing your research topic by answering the guiding questions WHAT, WHO, WHERE, WHEN and WHY?
3. Use your answers to those questions to develop a research question.
4. Watch Emily’s video on searching library databases.
5. Dissect your research question into key terms. Use one of UT’s library databases (ERIC, Infosource, psychinfo) to search your key terms.
How many results did you get?
6. Change one thing in your research to make it more refined (or broader). How many results do you have now?
7. In the discussion below, share the following with your classmates: a) Your research question, b) your Key Terms for your search (don’t forget synonyms), c) How many results you got
8. Gently encourage your colleagues with guiding questions: (ie. What population do you plan to use? Have you considered…?)
EXAMPLE:
a) My research question is – What factors contribute to attrition (dropping out) for first generation, post-secondary students at medical/doctoral universities in Canada (1990-present)?
b) Key terms – Post-secondary OR higher education OR college OR university; attrition OR drop-out; first generation students; research university OR medical/doctoral universities
c) I got 5000 results for my first search and then I added Canada for my second search and got 600.
